Top 10 Things to Do in Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico
Planning a trip to Valle de Guadalupe? Mexico’s wine country is about much more than just wine. Between boutique wineries, incredible food, beautiful views and unique local experiences, there’s plenty to fill a weekend—or longer.
Here are 10 of our favorite things to do in Valle de Guadalupe.
1. Go Wine Tasting
You can’t visit Valle without trying the wine. Instead of spending the whole day at one type of winery, we recommend mixing it up: visit a small boutique producer, a medium-sized winery and one of the larger scenic properties.
Some of our favorites include Vinos Cruz, Cava Maciel, Emevé, Hacienda Montero, Viña de Frannes, Decantos and Las Nubes.
Local tip: Two or three wineries in one day is usually plenty. Valle is much more enjoyable when you’re not rushing from one reservation to another.
2. Have a Long Baja-Style Lunch
Food has become just as important to Valle de Guadalupe as wine. Make time for a relaxed lunch featuring local seafood, grilled meats, fresh produce and Baja-Med cuisine.
One of the classics is Finca Altozano, an open-air restaurant from chef Javier Plascencia. Valle is also home to acclaimed restaurants such as Fauna and Animalón.
3. Watch the Sunset
One of the best ways to finish a day in wine country is with a sunset overlooking the vineyards, mountains or Pacific coast.
Bar Bura Cuatro Cuatros is particularly popular for its dramatic coastal views. Make this your last stop rather than trying to squeeze another winery into the afternoon.
4. Start the Day With a Local Breakfast
Before the wine, have a proper Baja breakfast.
Doña Esthela has become one of Valle’s best-known breakfast stops and is particularly famous for its traditional Mexican breakfast dishes.
Starting with breakfast also gives you a chance to experience a completely different side of Valle before the tasting rooms get busy.
5. Discover a Small Boutique Winery
The big wineries are impressive, but some of our favorite experiences happen at smaller producers.
Boutique wineries tend to offer a more personal atmosphere and give visitors a chance to learn about the people actually making the wine.
If you’re genuinely interested in Mexican wine, include at least one boutique producer in your itinerary.
6. Learn About Mexican Wine
Want to understand what you’re drinking?
Visit the Museum of the Vine and Wine, located along the main Tecate–Ensenada highway. It’s a good introduction to the history of wine production in Baja California before heading out for tastings.
7. Take the Scenic Roads Through the Valley
Part of the Valle experience is simply exploring it.
Vineyards, mountains, dirt roads and striking winery architecture make the drive between stops part of the trip itself. Give yourself time between reservations instead of planning every minute of the day.
Just remember that many roads in Valle are unpaved.
8. Try Something Besides Wine
Need a break between tastings?
Valle also offers craft beer, cocktails, coffee, local products and cheese. Adding a non-winery stop can make the day much more enjoyable—especially if not everyone in your group is a serious wine drinker.
9. Stay Overnight in Wine Country
If your schedule allows it, stay at least one night.
Hotels, boutique properties and vineyard accommodations let you enjoy dinner and wine without worrying about making the drive back immediately afterward. Recent destination guides commonly recommend spending multiple days in Valle rather than treating it only as a quick stop.
10. Hire a Private Driver and Build Your Own Route
Valle de Guadalupe is spread out, many roads are unpaved, and wine tasting obviously doesn’t mix well with driving.
At Wine in Mexico Tours, we offer private transportation throughout Valle de Guadalupe. You can choose the wineries and restaurants you want to visit, or we can help you build an itinerary based on your group, wine preferences and the type of experience you’re looking for.
We can also arrange transportation from Ensenada, Valle de Guadalupe, Tijuana, Rosarito and the U.S.–Mexico border, making it easier to enjoy the day without worrying about driving.

The biggest mistake we see visitors make is trying to fit too much into one day.
